Side note: A theme for Windows consists of sounds and pictures
which encapsulate a subject (for example: sports, art, computers,
etc). Events on the PC coincide with particular sound files, such as
opening or closing a window, or perhaps shutting down the PC. In
short, themes can easily and quickly make a dramatic difference to a
PC's look and feel!
This page is dedicated to the
collection of desktop themes around the net. For those who don't know
about desktop theme, it is a collection of cursors, animated cursors,
sounds, wallpaper, and even screensaver assembled into one theme. To use
Desktop Themes, you will need
MicrosoftWindows 95
, or Windows
98, or
Windows ME and
Microsoft Plus! If you have Windows XP the Plus is build in
to the Operating System.
If you
are used to using Windows 9x/ME, and like to use Themes to change the
"look and feel" of your user interface, you may be wondering what
happened to Themes in Windows 2000. Although none are installed by
default, you can still use them. In Windows 9x/ME you would use the
Themes applet in the control panel. In Windows 2000, you can work with
themes by clicking Start, then Run, then typing "themes.exe" without the
quotes and clicking OK. There are no Themes automatically installed with
Windows 2000, but you can copy them (files named *.theme) from a Windows
9x/ME machine. For use on my Windows 2000 computer, I simply copied the
entire Program File\Plus!\Themes directory from another Windows ME
computer.
Warning:
This is for you people who are running a older Operating System. There are
reported problems with Microsoft's Plus! Pack, FrontPage97, and
Office97. If after installing Office97 or FrontPage97 you have a problem
running Plus!, search for the file Themes.Exe on the Office97 and
FrontPage97 CDROM, then copy it into your \Plus! directory. Or you can
get the THEMES.EXE patch file from
Microsoft.
